get interviewing

We have immediate need for people willing to talk to artists and record what happens.

You don't need to be a published writer or have an MFA. An interest in artists is pretty much the only requirement.  We can help you with the rest. We can walk you through all the interviewing basics and get you started.

Here's how it works:

  1. Artists express an interest in setting up an interview and fill out our questionnaire.
  2. We read the questionnaire and contact an interviewer likely to be able to reach the artist in person.
  3. You can accept or turn down assignments with no hassle from us.
  4. If you accept an assignment, we'll expect you to do your homework and contact the artist to set up a meeting.
  5. We'll ask you to provide an unedited record (audio or video is easiest, or email/IM transcripts) of the interview.
  6. We'll publish the interview in both an edited and unedited version.  We'll decide together on a creative commons license for your work.
  7. We'll continue to offer you assignments as long as you're willing.
  8. No money is involved.

If you're interested, please complete our interviewer questionnaire here.

Where will my interview get published?
In print, available in NYC in our free, ad-supported zine.  Online, both at our webzine and as syndicated content licensed out to reblogggers.
I just submitted a questionnaire.  When will I be contacted for an interview?
We read every response and then coordinate with our staff of interviewers.  Depending on where you live and the workload of the interviewers in your area, the average is two weeks.  If you have any questions about the status of your interview, please write us at info AT heyartistgetinterviewed DOT com.
How long will it take before my interview is published?
Depends on whether you interview needs to be transcribed and how much editing we do.  Usually, it should appear online within a few business days.  Print publication will take longer.  We don't have a set print schedule.  We're collecting now for issue #1.
How much does this cost/pay out?
Nobody gets any money. We try to cover costs, though and this happens through ads.
Why can't I get interviewed in person?
We run this out of NYC, and are building our staff in other places. If we can't find a way to meet with you in person, it's probably because we don't have any interviewers anywhere near you. Come to New York.  It's fun here.
What affiliation/sponsorship/funding is involved in this?
Nothing, none.  We don't work for any museum, institution, gallery or publisher. We are looking for ways to cover overhead, and are actively pursuing funding.

self interview kit

In addition to interviews, we also produce Self Interview Kits®.

Right now, there's one Kit® available. It's online and you can get to it here.

We also produce Kits that are d.i.y. packs, available from several locations in NYC. Be on the lookout for these late winter and spring 2008.

We publish your response to a Self Interview Kit® just as if we were there interviewing you in person.  We also compare and group your responses with other artists who reply in complimentary ways.
