We run a free service that connects artists and interviewers in the NYC area, and we publish the results.

It works like this [...]
1. You fill out our questionnaire, here.
2. We read your submission, and check out your links.
3. If you live in or near NYC, we'll do our best to arrange an in-person meeting. We'd prefer to meet at your studio.
4. If you live somewhere else, we'll ask you whether we can edit and publish your questionnaire.
5. One of our interviewers wiil record the interview and submit it to the folks at the office.
6. We'll edit, tag, and post your interview here, and will also crosspost to over a dozen other places online.
7. We'll review your interview when we put together upcoming issues of our print magazine and might include it.
8. No money is involved. This is all volunteer-run.

about the magazine

by Matt Fisher last modified May 10, 08 19:07

Welcome to the working, open, beta site for project muster and muster magazine.

We're a project.  We're trying to improve on the way that most art magazines are put together, and we're working from the ground up on alternatives to the norm.  We think art publishing should be as open, collaborative and transparent as possible.

We publish Muster Magazine. It is by, for and about artists and their communities.  We aren't interested in making yet another art magazine funded by and beholden to the latest art fashions. We'd rather present all kinds of artists--emerging, mid-career and blue chip--and the ways they think and talk about what they're doing.  We talk about artists who show in museums and ones who show in coffeeshops.

We think that most of the writing in any art magazine should come directly from artists, whether by interviews or from artists writings.  To do this, we're making a submission and editing process that's completely different from most magazines.  We're borrowing features of social networks to start coversations, gather both amateur and professional writings, and present more of an ongoing transcript than an editorial comment. Submission to the print magazine and to this web portal is always open, and takes place by dong things at this site.  We consider comments, discussions, self-uploaded files, shared images, and any posts to be submissions to and part of the project.  And we tag, syndicate and promote everything that you send us.

We select items for the print magazine from this website, so submission to the site and to print are actually the same thing. Our magazine is an ongoing record and commentary on what we're doing. We hope to have the first print issue of Muster out this summer.

Since we're just getting started, this project is completely run by volunteers. There are no paid positions and we don't pay for posts.

terms of use

by Matt Fisher last modified May 04, 08 06:05

Here are the terms of use in simple, plain English:

By uploading or adding content to this site, you are granting the owners of this site explicit permission to reuse part or all of your content--whether text or media files-- both online and in print.

We expect you to only post content here that you hold the copyright for (i.e. either you're the creator/author, or you hold the copyright via some kind of negotiation), and by posting or adding content, you agree that you have rights/permission to do so.

Of course, the nature of the web is to post, repost and link to various kinds of content along a spectrum of copyright and copyleft.  We make no claims (and can grant no permissions to claims) on content hosted elsewhere, though we do reserve the right to use of any descriptions, depictions or discussions posted/generated here regarding content hosted elsewhere.

We assert the rights of artists to protect the copyrights of their works, and we make reasonable efforts to determine and secure permissions to post/host images of copyrighted works/artworks here. Conversely, we strongly assert the right of artists to fair use of copyrighted works, and hope you know what is and isn't entailed by 'fair use.' One of those fair uses is critique or commentary, and so we assert that any reproduction of artworks here is legally protected since the purpose of this site is to generate and promote critique and commentary on works of art.

faq

Where will my interview get published?
In print, available in NYC in our free, ad-supported zine.  Online, both at our webzine and as syndicated content licensed out to reblogggers.
I just submitted a questionnaire.  When will I be contacted for an interview?
We read every response and then coordinate with our staff of interviewers.  Depending on where you live and the workload of the interviewers in your area, the average is two weeks.  If you have any questions about the status of your interview, please write us at info AT heyartistgetinterviewed DOT com.
How long will it take before my interview is published?
Depends on whether you interview needs to be transcribed and how much editing we do.  Usually, it should appear online within a few business days.  Print publication will take longer.  We don't have a set print schedule.  We're collecting now for issue #1.
How much does this cost/pay out?
Nobody gets any money. We try to cover costs, though and this happens through ads.
Why can't I get interviewed in person?
We run this out of NYC, and are building our staff in other places. If we can't find a way to meet with you in person, it's probably because we don't have any interviewers anywhere near you. Come to New York.  It's fun here.
What affiliation/sponsorship/funding is involved in this?
Nothing, none.  We don't work for any museum, institution, gallery or publisher. We are looking for ways to cover overhead, and are actively pursuing funding.

about the project

Welcome to the project

Muster is a new artist-centered publishing project that goes about things in a slightly unusual way.

We are artists and writers that have noticed how strongly published writing tends to mediate how we think and communicate about art. We notice the semiotic memes of literary criticism, business management, politics, and theory as they burrow into artspeech, arttwriting, and artthinking. We want to draw those memes out into the open and pour some sunlight on them.

This website collects and presents the documents related to our current projects. We use all the means at our disposal to distribute web-based content all over the place-- look for our podcasts, videos and transcripts wherever you subscribe to interesting things. We also publish a print magazine, and hope to have issue #1 our sometime during summer 2008.

Please ask questions to info AT musterproject DOT com.

More info posted at our blog.
